The current Dioceses Commission was established in 2008 under
Part II of the Dioceses, Pastoral and Mission Measure 2007 (please
click here for further details). It has
a primary duty to keep under review the provincial and diocesan
structure of the Church of England and in particular:
- the size, boundaries and number of provinces;
- the size, boundaries and number of dioceses and their
distribution between the provinces;
- the number and distribution of bishops and the arrangements for

The Commission has so far undertaken two boundary reviews:
Dioceses of Ely and Peterborough- City of Peterborough (please
click here for more information).
The three West Yorkshire dioceses of Bradford, Ripon and Leeds
and Wakefield (please click here for details of the Dioceses of
Bradford, Ripon & Leeds and Wakefield Reorganisation Scheme).
The new Diocese of Leeds (West Yorkshire and the Dales) will come
into being on 20 April 2014 (Easter Day).

Suffragan Sees and Episcopal Oversight
The Commission also has responsibilities in relation to the
creation and filling of suffragan sees and it is entitled to be
consulted about any proposal to change the name of an episcopal

Episcopal Oversight in the Diocese of York
A consultation took place on episcopal oversight in the Diocese
of York during 2013. The Commission produced a report which has
been discussed by the York Archbishop's Council and the York
